June Zee Schultz, 98, of Holiday Island, Ark., passed away January 29, 2023, at her home.
She entered this life June 26, 1924, in Little River, Kansas, the daughter of Roy and Nellie (Smith) Zent. During the Dust Bowl, in 1934, the family traveled by covered wagon and car to Carthage, Mo., and eventually to the Red Oak and Spencer communities. She graduated from Lockwood, Mo., High School in 1943.
June was united in marriage to James Schultz on Jan. 14, 1946, in Girard, Kansas. They shared 68 years together until his passing in 2014.
For many years they resided on the family farm in the Plew community where they raised their daughter, Linda. June was a hairdresser by trade, and many conversations and stories were shared in the little shop behind their house. She was well known for her spunk with a sense of humor and loved to entertain family and friends. She had a great affection for the children and families in her community, cherishing the relationships formed there over the years.
Her many nieces, nephews, and eventually great-nieces and great-nephews, loved spending time at her house because there were so many things June had planned for them. The girls loved the many dolls she collected and allowed them to play with. The boys loved all the handmade wooden toys James made in his shop. For a home with no young children, there were lots of things to keep little ones entertained! Many happy Christmases and family gatherings were held in their home.
In retirement, June and James moved to Mount Vernon, Mo. They continued making friends and socializing at every opportunity. Even though they were in town, their house was still a fun place to be, and the train in the basement is a special memory for their great-great nieces and nephews.
Eventually, June and James moved to Holiday Island with her daughter, Linda. She enjoyed quilt making and crocheting. On her 97th birthday, she gifted some of her quilts to family members who now cherish these special keepsakes. She also took pleasure in crocheting fingerless gloves and loved giving them to those in the community.
She even had her own little business, Miss June’s Handmade Toasty Cozy’s, where she eventually sold her creations.
In addition to crafting, she took great pleasure in spending time at nearby Roaring River State Park. She gathered with family and friends there last summer to celebrate her 98th birthday.
She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. June is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Schultz; six brothers; and three sisters.
June is survived by her daughter, Linda Mackall of Holiday Island, Ark., and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.
A celebration of life will be planned for a later time. Memorial contributions may be made in June’s name to the charity of your choice. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Cremations of the Ozarks. To leave an online condolence, please visit cremationsoftheozarks.com.
