Jill Hodge, a cherished member of the Holiday Island community and a beacon of warmth and friendliness, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2024, at age 85. She was born Sept. 7, 1939, in Floresville, Texas, to John and Georgie (Morgan) Koenig.
A 1957 graduate from Paris High School in Paris, Texas, she went to Women’s Christian College and Texas Women’s University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in teaching, Jill was devoted to the education of young minds but also to the service of her community.
Jill’s love of the Ozarks brought her to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1985. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to own the Rosewood Guest Cottage until 1992, where she welcomed many guests. Her professional endeavors included a memorable tenure at the Victorian Sampler Tea Room, where her love for people shone brightly. As a concierge at the Crescent Hotel, she became the face of hospitality, sharing stories and smiles with visitors from near and far.
Jill was the mother to Christan Anderson and her husband, Ken, and a grandmother to Caringtan Walker and her husband, Joel, and Paytan Myers. Great-grandmother to Wyatt, Wynndle, and Woodson Walker, and Koe Myers. Jill’s family extended beyond relations, encompassing numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Though she outlived her beloved husband, Jerald Courtney (J.C.) Hodge, her daughter, Courtney Hodge, her parents, John and Georgie Koenig, her brothers Mertes and Jerry Koenig and her sisters, Mary Agnes White and Betty Murphy, they were surely waiting with open arms to welcome her into the next chapter of eternity.
Jill’s passions were as diverse as they were engaging. An avid lover of cats, she not only collected cat items but also provided a loving home to many feline companions over the years. Her appreciation for the past was evident in her love for antiques, a hobby that allowed her to connect with history and the stories it holds.
As a member of the Happy Hookers, she enjoyed the art of primitive rug hooking, creating pieces that were as much a part of her as her vivacious personality. Her love for needlepoint was shared with her church community, contributing kneelers to both St. James and Holy Cross Episcopal Churches.
Jill’s social life was rich and fulfilling. She relished her swims with her Holiday Island swimming buddies, embracing the joy of summer. Her Paris High School circle of friends, known as “The Nine,” was a testament to the deep bonds she forged. Together, they celebrated life’s and other significant events.
Jill loved sending cards from St. James Episcopal Church to all its members on birthdays and other memorable events.
Known for having the gift of gab, Jill never missed an opportunity to engage in conversation, whether it was to share a story, offer support, or simply brighten someone’s day. Her laughter and words will echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
