Holiday Island City Council’s June 21 meeting was mostly filled with updates to ongoing items with a single resolution made.

Resolution 2022-008, which was approved unanimously, allows for the city to enter into an inter-local agreement for HISID to provide road maintenance service through Dec. 31 of this year, including snow removal, storm damage recovery, mowing, and signage. The city agrees to pay 5.9 percent of the HISID road department budget totaling $24,673 and the agreement will be up for renewal in December of every year.

Mayor Dan Kees told council that an official offer was made to an individual for the position of Code Enforcement Officer he held an interview with a prospective Building Inspector. He said he was optimistic to have those positions filled soon.

Regarding zoning ordinances, council members discussed how other cities in Arkansas handle short term rentals in their zoning laws. It is intended to hold an informal workshop to hear from the public on how citizens of Holiday Island want these handled.

Council also grappled with the question of how to inform the public of a public hearing when a change of zoning ordinance is being made. State law requires an announcement in a newspaper of general circulation 15 days prior to the hearing within the area and council members noted that the only newspaper seemingly fitting the description of “general circulation” was the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Council members would investigate other area newspapers to see if they fit the definition.
