Historic house approved for makeover

At the August 15 Historic District Commission meeting, contractor Penny Pemberton represented an application for several repairs and updates on 9 Prospect. The house was built in 1897, and plans called for Pemberton to remove a front porch addition and construct one as represented in photos of the original porch. A rear addition would also be rebuilt, and the front porch entry would be from the street side to one or both ends.

City Economic Development Director Glenna Booth acknowledged Pemberton for her efforts to renovate “this extremely important but blighted house.” Vote to approve the application was unanimous.

Commissioners also approved the application for Pemberton to replace a non-original window in the front dormer at 26 Ridgeway. The replacement will be a wood double-hung salvaged window that fits the opening.

Commissioners approved the only item on the Consent Agenda:

  • 1 German Alley –new construction changes approved: change foundation stone, first floor stairway bump-out.

Consent Agenda items are Level I applications that the City Preservation Officer believes to be in accordance with the Design Guidelines.

Chair Steve Holifield presented the Administrative Approvals which are applications for repair or work involving no changes in materials but which include changes in roofing and paint colors:

  • 14 Washington St – repaint, same colors
  • 100 Spring – repair one window
  • 35 Steele – re-roof
  • 120 Oakridge – re-roof, replaces siding, soffit, facia as needed

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a revised Welcome Letter that, according to Booth, is sent to new historic district property owners as an introduction to commission procedures and rationale.

Next meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m.
