HDC pursues education expansion

The Historic District Commission met Feb. 5, and the three applications on the agenda received approval with few objections.

LeRoy and Sally Gorrell’s application to replace and extend a deck at 68 Wall St. was quickly approved. The house dates to 1976 and is considered non-contributing.

The next application was a little more complicated, but commissioners had few questions about a plan to add a fire escape ladder at 137 Spring St. James Statton received approval to extend a deck with a new section eight feet by 10 feet. Statton said he is converting a gallery to a rental unit, and the new unit will need a fire escape ladder. The application also called for replacing some awnings with black fabric.

At 190 N. Main St., Frank Grande received approval to replace some aluminum windows with wood composite windows. Commissioners also approved Grande’s plan to reframe a second-floor porch for new windows. The house, built in 1985, is considered non-contributing.

The HDC will meet next at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Level III applications were due Feb. 6, and Level II applications are due Feb. 12.

A workshop is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Feb. 19, to discuss ways to educate the public on HDC requirements. The commissioners have seen several recent applications for work already in place, and some homeowners have said they did not know about the need for HDC approval for exterior work.

The commission still has a vacancy.
