HDC approves atypical stonework

271

The Historic District Commission made quick work of three applications at its Oct. 17 meeting though one of them was a bit complicated. Contractor Penny Pemberton represented the application for 9 Prospect, a contributing property, in which stone steps had to be relocated so a sewer line could be installed.

Pemberton planned to move the steps 20 ft. to the east and reattach them to the same wall that would also be leveled with additional matching limestone. Pemberton also planned to unearth a limestone slab buried vertically along the front sidewalk and repurpose it as a capstone for the stone wall. Finally, the application called for adding limestone stairways to the south end and center of the lower rear porch.

Commissioners found the application complied with the guidelines, so they voted unanimously to approve the application.

They approved these two other applications:

  • 14 Elk – side deck fencing
  • 1 German Alley – new construction revision

Commissioners approved these two items on the Consent Agenda:

  • S. Main – new sign
  • 7 Pine – new sign

The Consent Agenda items are Level I applications that the City Preservation Officer believe to be in accordance with the Design Guidelines.

Chair Steve Holifield presented these Administrative Approvals which are applications for repair and work involving no changes in materials but which include changes in roofing and paint colors:

  • 11 Douglas – replace siding; repair stairs
  • 507 Spring – remove garage roof to evaluate condition.

Next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m., which is one day earlier than the usual Wednesday time slot and will be the only meeting in November.
