HDC approves affordable housing unit

Nicky Boyette – The Historic District Commission and applicant Bill King moved closer to final approval of his proposed new construction of a two-story affordable housing unit on Point Street. King originally applied for a three-story design but altered the plan to a slightly larger 830 sq.-ft. footprint with one less story.

King also said his preference was for a burnished slate lap-panel steel roof. He commented the design guidelines allow for this roof for new constructions. Chair Dee Bright reminded commissioners the property in question is not visible from the main street. “There’s nothing down there,” she said.

Commissioner Doug Breitling said he had no problems with King’s plan except for more specifics about the doors. King agreed to return with more on the doors and paint colors at another meeting. The vote to approve the revised plan was unanimous.

Commissioners also approved these applications:

  • 42 Vaughn – replace front door
  • 7 Washington – rear privacy fence
  • 63 1/2 N. Main – replace upper rear porch

Contractor Penny Pemberton represented the application to remove a 16×23 ft. prefabricated building from 10 Drennon. She said the structure was too large to move as it is, so the plan was to take it apart and reassemble it elsewhere. That application was approved.

The application to install new material for a front porch at 1 Frisco was tabled for a site visit.

There were no items on the Consent Agenda. Bright presented these two Administrative Approvals, which are applications for repair or work involving no changes in materials or color but which include applications for changes in roofing color.

Level I – 5 Spring – repair front window

Level I – 63 ½ N Main – repair front brick parapet

Next meeting will be Wednesday, June 15, at 6 p.m.
