Hope each and every one had a happy and safe 4th of July. Reminder of the week – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Well, I think we can all figure out what time of the year it is by looking at these pictures… Catfish Time! Yeah, fun for all.

Richard Lee Rusher, his wife Elizabeth, and daughters, 2 yr. old Arya, 4 yr. old Onna, and 6 yr. old Izzy all went fishing together for blue gill to gather some bait for jugs and trotlines. Kids love to catch… it doesn’t have to be big, just a lot of action to keep them entertained. Kids had a great time and now you have your bait. Win-win.

Off to set the lines and now wait overnight. They came back early the next morning to see what they got. He said the anticipation is like Christmas morning, not knowing what you might have on the end of those lines. And hunting for the jugs is like “Easter egg hunting for grownups!”

I heard of another catfish close to this size that was caught last week by trolling for crappie – cats are on the bite. He said it put up quite a fight on a crappie pole, trolling Pico Crankbaits. He also added that catfish will suspend in the thermocline and readily hit trolled cranks. All on Beaver Lake.

So, there are all different ways of fishing for them. All kinds of places to look for them here in this area we have them in Lake Leatherwood, Table Rock Lake, Beaver Lake, Kings River, and the list goes on. Different ways of catching them, trotlines, rod and reel, jugs, limb lines, and noodling.

To noodle, all you need is your bare hands (and a fair amount of bravery) to catch a catfish. Catfish lay eggs and build nests in underwater holes, hollowed-out tree trunks, and in rocky nooks. When you find a catfish nest, drop down into the water by the nest and start feeling around. If there’s a catfish there, it’ll probably be protecting its nest and will act aggressively, giving you a chance to grab it by its lower jawbone and get a good grip on it.

Pull the catfish close to your body, lift it out of the water, and take it to shore. Easy as that, hahaha.
