Good day folks.

I got to fish Kings River for myself after helping Doug River Man Allen with his wonderful classes for children to learn about the river and how to fish. We started by learning about the rules and the river, then were passed out t-shirts, hats, fishing poles, and nice gear bags full of goodies that they could take home with them.

We started out catching bait and identifying the species which they fished with later. Fish were caught by all – smallmouth and sun perch or red ear.

Then we hiked down the river, had our sack lunches, and finished up with some swimming. Doug had a great team of volunteers, it was great making new friends with Gail Ivie DeWeese, Rob Ceola, and Randal Embrey. Pictured here is Parker, he was one of the students. He caught smallmouth, also this beauty of sunfish.

Doug had given me a special crawdad pattern fly custom made by the famous Duane Hada, artist and owner of Rivertown Gallery in Mountain Home, Ark. It’s called Hada Creek Crawler.

So that afternoon I had to try it out. It looks so real, and the fish thought so as well. I caught so many smallmouth bass, and three Kentucky bass. I was fly fishing, but it works with conventional fishing also – minnows, crickets, worms, and of course, crawdads.

Lures that work well are tube jigs in smoke color, white with red neck roostertails, and 3-in. green pumpkinseed worm. Then don’t forget to try top water excitement early morning and late evening. Tiny Torpedo is my go-to on topwater action.

Then earlier last week I was able to hit the beautiful Beaver Lake. The water feels so go to me right now, the fish don’t like the water temp at the top until early morning and late evening, then they go up shallower. Fish have gone a little deeper in the daytime close to the thermocline (the cooler water at the bottom).

My magic number was right at 17 ft. deep. Trolling crankbaits right up onto points. I caught walleye, smallmouth, one small largemouth bass, and one white bass. The action didn’t get started till about 1 hour before dark and short lived.
