You know it is Spring when the redbuds and dogwoods trees are in bloom. You know for sure it`s time to go fishing, mushroom hunting, turkey hunting. They say when you see the redbuds bloom the white bass are here, well guess they are here. Everything is all waking up from a deep hibernation, as well as me.

Mushrooms, walleye, white bass, spoonbill, crappie, turkey hunting, and lots of boats on the water. Great time of the year to be out. Even if you don’t participate in these activities watching is a grand thing.

It was an all time favorite of my late father’s, he liked to people watch and help if anyone was in need. If I were you, I would spend time going below the dam to see these guys going for the big spoonbill, also called paddlefish. It is a very hard job but OH… a sight to see. Spoonbill season started on April 15 and ends on June 15.  Below Beavertail water: You almost have to have generated water to produce these monsters. Big boys and gals and big gear… fun to watch. Cheap Arkansas entertainment. They don`t mind you watching, but I would offer a drink to them.

Regs below Beaver Dam:

  • No fishing within 100 yards of Beaver Dam.
  • A trout permit is required to fish in this area.
  • Anglers may use no more than one fishing rod or pole at a time and must attend it at all times.
  • No other devices may be used to catch fish.
  • Multiple point hooks with barbs are allowed.
  • Bait fishing is only allowed with a single hooking point.
  • Daily limit of 5 trout.
  • All trout from 13 to 16 inches in length must be released immediately and may not be in possession in Beaver Tailwater.
  • Only one trout over 16 inches may be kept.

This is for sure the time to hire a guide for whatever type of fishing you prefer. Like me in hibernation, I`m back and ready for the season.
