Spring is here!

So, I had the opportunity to get my hands on some crawdads. In the past, I have done well catching trout and walleye with my crawdads on the White River, so I struck out for the river, but had a few die.

I couldn’t waste them, so I decided to take them to an old family farm pond. Put them on a jig head, jigged it through the weeds, and man they hammered them hard. I want to go back today with live ones.

I only had about eight dead ones. I don`t even know what they would do with the live ones.

Crawfish, crayfish, and crawdads are the same animal. Which term you use may depend on where you live. Louisianans most often say crawfish, whereas Northerners are more likely to say crayfish. People from the West Coast or Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas often use the term crawdad. In the Mississippi Delta, they call them mudbugs.

I have always called them crawdads. I remember trying to catch them in my yard as a child out of a mud clob, a mud compound with a hole in the top. We would put a piece of bacon on a string and drop it into the hole and gently pull the dads up and out of the hole. Very intense and slow progress but as a child didn’t have much else to do after doing chores. It was more about the challenge. It was this or making mud pies in mud puddles, riding a bicycle, playing with the dogs.

My kids would go to a low water bridge using the same method on fishing poles, bacon on hook for hours of fun and competition. These days I like to use a trap, again using meat of any sort in the lake. But sometimes losing the trap from people, sadly, stealing the trap.

Everything eats a crawfish, crayfish, and crawdads. Most adult crawdads are preyed on by large fish, otters, raccoons, mink and humans.
