Temperatures last week were up and down, just like the fishing. Reports from striper guides on Beaver Lake are that they are catching their limits before 9 a.m. People are going out at night or before sunrise using brooders, live shad and small bluegills.
The other great report I heard on Beaver Lake is that the catfish bite is very good, with some people trolling crank baits with catfish hammering it, that’s how aggressive catfish are right now. I’m ready for some nighttime time bank fishing.
Catfish are taking to nightcrawlers worms, chicken liver, blood bait, stink bait, cut up chicken pieces, soaked in strawberry Jell-O powder. I’ve always done best on small bream and big crawdads, even on trotlines, noodles and limb lines.
But the coolest place is the White River, Beaver Tailwater.
The water temp stays anywhere from about 42° to 58° all year long, making it perfect for trout fishery. So that’s exactly what Vannessa Wade and Ivy Bringnoni, repeat customers for the past 24 years from Dallas, did last weekend. They always bring a fun crew. This year they brought Vince and Kim Wade from Lavon, Texas, and Amanda and Cory Cruse of Haughton, Louisiana.
Vince is Vannessa’s brother, and had never caught a trout. Vannessa’s goal was to get him onto some trout, and boy on Saturday, he got his first trout. Saturday was perfect, 84° overcast and some showers. The trout loved it. We flowed with the generation, had two boats out, one throwing spoons and stick baits, the other drifting with power bait and nightcrawlers bumping the bottom.
On Sunday morning they decided to go on a kayak trip for the first 4 miles on the White River. We had a wonderful lunch at Riverview Resort and back in the boat we went for round two of trout fishing. Pictured is Cory with the big fish of our weekend, a 22-inch rainbow with a big belly.
