Well, summer has arrived hotter temps are coming. Staying hydrated is important when fishing because dehydration can lead to dizziness, fatigue, confusion, headache and disorientation. The average person needs at least 62 ounces of water per day. Some recommend drinking 16 ounces of water every hour.

Here are some tips for staying hydrated while fishing:

  • Take a lunch break or having a snack with a fishing buddy.
  • Set a phone reminder to drink water. (I do this one myself.)
  • Carry water in a hydration bladder or water bottles.
  • Try adding citursflavoring to your water.
  • Consider taking an electrolyte supplement, such as Emergen-C or Pedialyte.

Bring food along that can will you hydrated. Such as watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe.

Strawberries, pineapple, peaches, oranges, bell peppers, celery, cucumbers. When I was growing up, my parents used to bring along a cantaloupe in the summertime.

The hotter temperatures can affect the fish, also. Coldwater fish (trout) will start to feel stressed when water temperatures hit 68°. Warmwater fish can tolerate temperatures up to 86°, but they’ll probably be sluggish and slow to bite.

Beaver Lake reports have been excellent, bream are still excellent and being caught on crickets and worms in the 6- to 15-ft. range; these fish are shallow. Jugs and trotlines are producing catfish over main lake points with live or cut bait.

I’ve always done my personal best on live small bream. But what I’m hearing the most about these days is chicken pieces cut up, soaked in strawberry or cherry Jell-O overnight.

Stripers are still on the move. The best reports I’ve been hearing are people that are going at night using live shad, small bream, and large brooders minnows.

Tyler Iodence and his son, Dakota, along with Nate Seymore and his son, Coen, showing the result of their successful night of fishing. I’m hoping to get to jump on the boat with them next week.
