With multiple species being caught everywhere, people often ask me the best time of year to fish here.

Springtime! The first of March to the end of May. The rest of the year you can pretty much target what you’re going to fish for, but this time of the year you really don’t know what you’ll catch.

Many fishermen swear that 90% of their lifetime catches will come during the full and new moon.

This week is a waxing moon. Waxing moon phases occur between the new moon and the full moon phase. Some people say the moon has an influence on fishing. I say fish when you can fish and catch what you can.

It’s hard to say that the moon phases do not influence your fishing. What I do know is that every May, three days before and after the new moon, it is always excellent fishing.

I can also say I have seen a lot more fish movement right after the moon rises and right before it sets. I am sure there are many variables to this, but there has been some consistency in all the years I have fished. Many times, being in the right place at the right time is important of course, but I have hung out over a spot and just waited till the moon rose and suddenly the fish bite would turn on like a light switch. When a moon rise/set occurs within the hour of a sunrise/set, it seems to produce the best bites of the year.

This time of year, you can use almost use any bait I would say. I really like to troll whether on lakes or rivers lake or rivers, you can cover so many areas.

Also, you can use nightcrawlers or minnows off the bank this time of the year as everything is awake and hungry.

Tim McCarthy, a guide with a smile from Whitney, Texas, came here last week and caught multiple fish from Beaver Lake – crappie, bass, striped bass, smallmouth bass and a walleye.
