We always talk about taking kids fishing but what we don’t see a lot of kids taking elders or mothers out fishing for Mother’s Day, which has been a tradition for me and my son forever. I remember not feeling well on Mother’s Day one year and my son forced me to go, saying “at least for three casts,” so that we don’t break tradition. Of course, as soon as I got out there it was on.

I felt better and Iwas ready to win. They say fishing is relaxing, but if you’re going with certain people, it can turn into a competition – fast, stressful, and lots of fun.

Pictured is Jeannie Kelsey with a nice smallmouth bass caught off the bank on Beaver Lake. Her son, David Gatlin, took her out for Mother’s Day last weekend for some fishing. And I fortunate enough to get an invite. I have known Dave for years, but I had never met his mother, and that was a treat.

Dave and Jenny were using floating plastic worms. When I arrived, they handed me a fishing pole already rigged and ready to go. I did get some nibbles and one big tug on the line. But Jeannie was the only one who produced the fish on this morning. Two of these nice smallies I watched her bring to the shore in a short amount of time … way to go Jeannie!

Last week we mentioned Riverman School 2023 for kids 8 to 14 held on the Kings River June 3, or if you miss out on that date another one will be held on June 10. It’s $100 per kid – they each get a fishing pole, tackle bag and tackle, a Riverman hat and a signed copy of The Riverman’s Guide to the Kings River, and they learn to fish.

To find out how you can become a sponsor for a child call Doug “Riverman” Allen at (479) 790-6491 and hear his story about when he was sponsored as a child and what it meant to him.  If you can’t take a kid fishing, make sure a kid gets to experience this great time learning the Kings River.
