Gary Gene Adamson Oct. 16, 1930 – March 1, 2023

1352

Gary Gene Adamson died March 1, 2023, in Pensacola, Fla. He was 92. He was born in Springfield, Mo., on Oct. 16, 1930, to VT and Zola (McGuire) Adamson.

He was a lifelong artist and lifetime member of The National Cartoonists Society. He was a friend of Bill W for nearly 50 years, a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend to many.

His influence was felt by all who came in contact with him.

Gary enjoyed controversy stemming from his very left-wing images and commentary of politicians, including you-know-who as President. He spent many hours drawing cartoons at the Eureka Unitarian Universalists skewering The Donald’s every move!

He enjoyed a fantastic retrospective art show at Peachtree Village in Holiday Island that eventually had to be edited because his graphic nudes were a bit too risqué.

Gary always maintained a studio where he painted in oil and acrylics, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and computer-generated graphics. He earned two master’s degrees in painting in the 1980s.

In June 1952, he married Millicent Winslow Ames in Springfield, Mo. They made homes there, in Columbia, and St. Louis. He worked as an editor for several small magazines doing graphics and illustrations.

Millicent died in 1999, and Gary left St. Louis to live in New Mexico, a place they enjoyed visiting over the years. He eventually moved back to the Ozarks, bought a house in Eureka Springs and Springfield, where he enjoyed many close friendships in both communities, usually over a meal with plenty of coffee.

He absolutely adored any kind of movie, and in his last years would watch anything on Turner Classic Movies and know the entire cast by their names.

He supported Crystal Bridges, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. He bought hundreds of art books throughout his life.

He loved a simple meal, a cup of coffee, thin t-shirts, sweatpants, soft dogs, pretty women, hats and caps, walking sticks, accidental art, all forms of color, popcorn, Spam, pork and beans, Coke, and creating.

He will be missed. No services are planned at this time.

  2. What a great obit Peg! I feel I get a real sense of his character… and I would have loved a cup of coffee to discuss art with him

  3. Dear Gary, Thank you for being a kind and playful brother in law. For taking me to the movies (just you and me) at the Guilloiz movie theater in Springfield and for your sense of humor. So happy to see you in Pensacola. Have fun with your wings. Love, Liza
