Extra patrols after second assault

Eureka Springs Police are still investigating two assaults on Pine Street, one in June and one earlier this month. Police have beefed up patrols, and some citizens have said they are also informally patrolling.

In an email from ESPD’s Ryan Thomas, documents indicated no suspects, and victims did not see their assailant.

Jay Wilks reported being assaulted June 25 at 11:30 p.m.

“I was walking our dog before bed,” Wilks said. “I woke up on the front porch, knocking the chair off the porch and yelling at Keith that I had been attacked. My head was covered in blood. Keith called the police and the EMTs. I was taken to the Eureka Springs Hospital and had 10 staples in the back of my head.”

The second incident was nearly four months later, occurring at 10:25 p.m. October 12.

“I was on the phone with a friend and went outside to get something out of my car,” the victim said. “I was close to my house, but not right in front of my house. I was approached by someone who attacked me. It is an awful thing to say happened. I don’t know if they knew who I was or not. For my own personal safety and my family’s safety, I would rather not be identified.”

The resident, who sustained head injuries, said she is confident that the police are doing all they can to investigate the attack. And there has been an outpouring of concern from the community.

“Everyone has been super kind and supportive,” she said. “There is some discussion of installing security cameras on Pine Street. You have to be a little more careful.”

Police said there was another incident on Pine St. Oct. 8 that was a dispute between neighbors and not related to these assaults.
