Editor,
I acknowledge those who have phoned, emailed or texted thanking me for the time I spent on the ES Historic District Commission.
A designated historic district offers neighborhood stability, encourages heritage tourism, and among many other features, provides an accurate record for generations to come.
As a commissioner, I took my responsibility seriously and have indeed queried types of materials, asked for more accurate renderings, setback requirements and descriptions of proposed work, along with other items I felt required clarification. Being on any voluntary commission should be more than a warm body…
I love old, historic houses and have restored several—from an 1870ies “Long Island apostle house” to a 1756 Dutch farmhouse, to my present stone house, built in 1860ies, here in Eureka Springs. The many old stone walls, winding streets and varied architecture was what drew me to this area. I am eminently qualified to sit on a Historic Commission.
That the City Council chose against my re-appointment based on hateful, mean spirited & personal rantings from one individual, and manipulated lies from another, saddens me. It does not speak well for unbiased decision making nor for seeking truth in those allegations.
However, I am heartened by the kind words from those who have contacted me—and I still believe the majority of Eurekans are honest, open and concerned about the well-being of our town, its history and preservation for future generations.
Thank you.
