Dropping a Line

Find that warm water and catch some fish. Big fish this week is our best striper that made it to the boat so far this spring, but it’s not over yet and there’s a lot of big females still full of eggs.

Michael Titsworth from Van Buren, Ark., caught this 38 in. striper that we’re calling a 30 lb. fish, on Saturday. Think it’s that freight train we lost last week. Ran the same but he set the hook good and kept it tight.

Seems most my trips this spring have been upriver on Beaver chasing spawning stripers with not as many trips here at Holiday Island. I did go out last Thursday on my own and found out all that water they have been letting out of Beaver Lake seems to be keeping the main channel cooler then normal. Water temps are the trick to know when, where and what you fish for and if you’re fishing or catching. So if it’s not getting over 60° they will find that temp somewhere. Look up the creeks for about everything now. It’s the warmest.

What i have noticed on Beaver Lake upriver relates to here but it’s not being fed by the cold water but creek temps are about the same, we’re running through the 60s now. White bass are running as far up the rivers and creeks as far as they can go.

Find some shoreline buck brush or a brush pile and you should find some crappie. Just use a minnow or jig and drop in a hole or edge of the brush. The longer the rod the better so boat doesn’t spook them. Been picking up a few bass on our smaller bait down about 12 feet waiting their turn.

The day this comes out I  have a trip here looking for walleye upriver, Got that striper fever bad. Remembering the record striper was caught right here in the deeper tailwaters that came over the dam with the floodgates open and got far on trout. That fish topped over 60 lbs. Think we will be dragging a couple striper rods along with some big bait.

Well, I better get some work done. Enjoy this Spring. It seems to go fast.
