Dropping a Line

The storms have passed. The water has cooled. Boat pressure on the fish has about come to an end. Wake board boats will be in the past after one more holiday weekend, then the lakes are ours once more. I don’t mind sharing, it is good they like the sun when it’s high and most don’t get out till our day is done.

Most species of fish are still liking that water between 20 and 40 ft., but the top water bite is lasting longer in the mornings. Their main course of food, shad, are on the move and feeling the need to head back into the creek arms.

Most of this rain was cool, which means cool water is running and moving food with it. I myself took a week off as we go though this transition between summer and fall. Any who run a business here know we have a little slowdown after school starts, but did you know that October is the best month out of the whole summer?

Well, back to the fish, they don’t know that, but they do like this water temp creeping back into the 70s, so start your morning close to the top, remembering that most  fish are still going down to the water they’re used to this time of year, so search where it drops off the flats, points and the creek mouths.

If you have no luck, head to the back of that creek, for the transition is starting.

Enjoy this cool week, as I will. I’m back on the water Friday and I know where I’m going, now I just have to decide if wearing sandals and shorts or jeans and boots.
