Dropping a Line

Just got off water. Left phone in truck. Always something. Here’s a pic of Brian Waggoner of Joplin, Mo., with a nice walleye we just caught at Holiday Island.

The magic number is 28 for most all warm water fish now. That’s where the thermocline is running on both lakes. Thermocline is a steep temperature gradient in the lake marked by a layer above and below where the water is at different temperatures, so it separates zones of widely different temperatures.

Lakes go through seasonal water temp changes, so the layers mix and then separate. Then density increases between the surface and deeper layers. When surface water gets hotter it forms a thermal energy, so water doesn’t mix very far down, and that forms barriers. The top layer has good oxygen and steady temp. Middle layer has rapid temp changes, and bottom layer, the coldest, has a gentle temp fluctuation.

The clearer the water, the deeper the thermocline. Fish the thermocline and up about five feet, get some bass.

Sorry not much more to say this week but I have fish to clean. Stay safe and take a kid fishing.
