Dorothy Veronica Fliss, 99, passed from this life on January 24, 2022, at her home in Eureka Springs, Ark. She died peacefully accompanied by loved ones. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and two husbands.
She is survived by her two children from her first marriage, Joan (William) Zirzow of St. Charles, Ill.; Joyce Lessely of Cassville, Mo.; and three children from her second marriage, Jim (Aviva) Fliss of Eureka Springs, Ark.; Larry (Jackie) Fliss of Conway, Ark.; Carol (Kelly) Kennedy of Eureka Springs, Ark.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She born November 21, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., and grew up in the Depression. She often told stories of living with relatives with her mother and sister, and riding the Chicago “L” for a nickel in the summer for a breeze and entertainment. She learned to sew dresses from material that her aunt would give her. She owned and operated several businesses in her lifetime, including a small store on the south side of Chicago and a bar in Niles, Illinois.
In the early 1960s, she and her second husband, Frank Fliss, bought a cottage home in northwest Ontario where the family would spend their summers fishing, swimming and picking blueberries. It was an integral part of their lives for decades. In 1977, she and Frank bought the KOA campground in Eureka Springs. Frank passed away in 1980 and Dorothy continued to run the business for another 10 years.
Her hobbies included horseback riding and playing cards, both of which she did into her later years. She favorite game was pinochle. She loved dogs, especially standard poodles, and owned several in her lifetime.
Memorial services will be held and announced at a later date.
