Flint Street Fellowship has lost a very valuable volunteer and a beloved friend. Dave Wiegers went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17. Dave had been with Flint Street Food Pantry for nine years and worked at the pantry up to three weeks before he succumbed to cancer.
He worked in the repackaging kitchen and was in charge of the storeroom, keeping the shelves stocked, organized, and readily accessible for the distribution of food for the pantry’s clients. His duties included receiving and directing the stocking of food shipments.
He came into the pantry a couple of hours prior to opening each Monday and Wednesday and worked hard to make sure the area was ready for operation at opening time.
Dave was kind and gentle, quiet, decisive, caring, disciplined, wise, organized, and very hard working – all with a sense of humor. It was comforting to management and the volunteers to know Dave was working behind the scenes. He had a strong commitment to Flint Street Fellowship and also, whenever possible, to the Cup of Love food ministry.
Dave also went the extra mile to be a friend and help to Jerry Brumbley and Jessie Hughey. He cared for those in need and when the opportunity arose, did what he could to provide assistance.
Dave very much wanted to be in the background and never wanted to receive any accolades. He worked like his purpose at Flint Street was to make everyone else’s job easier. Dave worked for an audience of one — God — and never for his own glory.
We all loved Dave Wiegers and are missing him very much. Our prayers are with his family and loving wife, Phyllis.
