The City of Eureka Springs outdoor warning system consists of three sirens that will sound in the event of impending severe weather, primarily tornados. If you hear the sirens, take shelter immediately and seek additional information from your shelter or safe room.
- Sirens run for three minutes. This is an automated feature, we do not manually shut them off. Sirens may be reactivated as long as there is a threat.
- We do not sound an “all-clear.” Continue to monitor local weather information and use your judgment for safe conditions.
- The siren volume is not adjustable, although they may seem louder at different times. This is due to wind direction, weather conditions and position of the siren.
- Although we can selectively sound individual sirens, due to our small land area it will be policy of the city to sound all the sirens during tests and/or weather emergencies.
- Sirens are intended for outdoor warning only. Do not rely on the sirens for your only source indicating impending severe weather as you may or may not be able to hear them from within buildings.
- Do not rely on sirens to wake you up in the event of an emergency. The best way to assure that you will be awakened is to have a programmed NOAA radio in your sleeping area. Our Emergency Management staff will help you program your weather radio if needed.
- Utilize other means of warning for indoors. We recommend having at least three sources of current weather information available, including local TV and radio, NOAA All-Hazards radio, and social media. Phone and tablet apps only count as one information source because they all rely on the same technology.
- Assume there may be a power outage.
- Eureka Springs sirens are tested audibly every third Tuesday at noon unless weather is threatening. It is not necessary to seek shelter during a test.
