From Mayor Butch Berry:

I just got noticed that SB197 (short term rentals) will be heard by the House this Wednesday (March 1) at 10:00 a.m., Big Mac Room B (building behind Capitol if you weren’t there last week). This bill passed the Senate Committee last week and passed on the floor (however, there were three No votes). If you want your voice heard, you’d better contact your representatives ASAP or plan to attend the meeting. Last week, the meeting room was full of people who owned rentals. The Municipal League and a couple of others were the only ones to speak against it. One Senator made it very clear his mind was made up and if anyone wanted to changed it after it was adopted, there was still time to file another piece of legislation. (It seems to me like it would be better to amend it before adopting it). Please let Representative Harlan Breaux and the others on this committee know your feelings. This is very important to Eureka Springs.
The bill has been slightly amended, but still almost entirely restricts a city or town’s ability to regulate short-term rentals. More specifically, even though short-term rentals are effectively businesses in residential districts, cities and towns cannot regulate them any differently than any other house. It’s important for Representatives to know the issues you are facing with short-term rentals.

  1. You are opposed to preventing the Government from having a strangle hold on local business? (On a persons home?) Don’t we have enough gov control? Why does the word “Communist” hang out there in the void.?
