The outrage is coming so fast that yesterday’s outrage is supplanted by today’s. Our government is being dismantled so quickly that it’s hard to know how long it can last.
I was in my early teens when I watched a furious Khrushchev bang his shoe on the desk at the U.N. proclaiming that his country would not need to fire a shot, but would destroy ours from within. Today, it seems that they have almost won the battle.
Donald Trump has declared himself the King and President Musk, though unelected and not even a government employee or official, is dismantling every agency he doesn’t like. I find it ironic that the agencies he hates most are investigating his various companies and their issues; be it Starlink, Tesla or Neurolink, the company that wants to implant something in our brains for some reason. But the destruction is real, and lives are upended for reasons unknown to us.
That might be a distraction from the Republicans’ efforts to find 7 trillion dollars to save the richest among us from paying taxes. Medicaid is on the chopping block. The Republicans want to cut $800 billion from a budget that was $816 billion in 2024. Social Security is in their crosshairs, too. People under 59 will have to wait longer to retire with dignity, and hungry children will see SNAP benefits disappear.
But wait, there’s more. Kennedy Jr. wants to ban anti-depressants and weight loss drugs and send people to the countryside to pick vegetables. That seems a reasonable solution to the deportation of immigrants who once did that work. Welcome to our Brave New World.
