Airport to re-open October 5

Carroll County Airport will close for a week to allow for sealing aprons and runway. Consulting Engineer Dan Clinton told Carroll County Airport commissioners last week that work should start Sept. 26 and take until Oct. 4.

Clinton described a process of cleaning and sealing cracks, applying a seal coat, and then adding markings.

  • The airport served as a site for early voting during the primary election, and County Judge Ronda Griffin asked about the impact on airport operations. Commissioners noted some inconveniences, and a commission meeting had to be postponed a week. All agreed, however, that publicity for the airport far outweighed the minimal disruption. Many who voted there had not been to the airport before.
  • Commissioners continued discussion of widening Tri-State Road, which provides access to the section of airport where Tri-State Airmotive is located. To meet county road standards, easements would have to go from 40 ft. to 50 ft., and presence of a water line may affect choices in obtaining additional easements.
  • Commissioners discussed a supplemental wind cone at the west end of the runway, or other possible sites.
  • The commission voted in favor of a $100 deposit to investigate a technology that might bring Wi-Fi to hangars.
  • A 500-gallon propane tank on airport property might have come from a house formerly located on the grounds. After testing, it will be offered for sale, and is expected to bring from $250 to $300.
  • The commission has received inquiries about rental of common areas. A radio club would like to hold a regular monthly meeting, and the airport has been rented out for events such as weddings in the past, but a regular schedule would present problems. Griffin suggested using the Community Room on the Public Square in Berryville. Commissioner Sandy Martin said she will draft a policy for use of facilities.
  • Martin discussed need for listing major projects for 2023, along with a wish list of other possible expenditures. She said the budget should be ready for vote in November. Justice of the Peace John Howerton was in attendance, and he said county funding will be similar to last year.
  • The airport’s dumpster has been used for unauthorized dumping by someone who knows the gate code. Hangar tenants can use the dumpster, but it will now be locked.
  • The airport sold just over 2,000 gallons of fuel in August in 90 transactions.
