Airport qualifies for grants with higher limits

The Carroll County Airport Commission met last Friday with a new consulting engineer to outline plans for future grant applications.

Joey Wallace, with Grimes Consulting Engineers, Inc., replaces Dan Clinton. Clinton had a long relationship with the airport until his recent retirement.

Wallace said the airport would be eligible for a 90/10 grant, an 80/20 grant, and a 50/50 grant. The grant limits have increased from $300,000 to $500,000, and the CCAC could use that grant to build new hangars. The 80/20 grant might be used to replace the roof on an existing set of tee-hangars.

Commissioners briefly discussed the recent application of a sealer to the runway. The company applying the sealer was in the process of being sold, and the application was not performed properly. The company which acquired them will be contacted about supporting the warranty.

In other business:

  • Airport Manager Mark Pepple said fuel sales have been strong, and he expected additional sales over the coming weekend, with fliers headed to Oshkosh, Wis. He said a new latch has been added for the pilots’ lounge, with a code for access at any time.
  • A revised lease for Larkin Floyd’s property will be available at the Aug. 18 meeting.
  • At the request of Commissioner Morris Pate, the commission will seek bids to pour a slab to extend the outdoor area currently under a canopy.
  • Bids will be taken for a new hangar 50 feet square. Wallace said $40 per square foot was typical a few years ago, but a hangar now costs almost $100 per square foot. With a 90/10 grant, the airport should recover its share of the cost within five years.
