Airport fuel prices lowered

When the members of the Carroll County Airport Commission met Nov. 18, they learned of an upcoming visit from representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA visit is scheduled for Dec. 8, and the visitors are expected to arrive sometime after 8 a.m.

The meeting will focus on how commissioners are proceeding with long-term plans. Commissioners are encouraged to attend, along with pilots using the airport.

At the November meeting, commissioners spent time considering fuel prices. The commission has guidelines to set prices from 15 to 25 percent over cost. Currently, however, the markup is closer to 25 percent, and the airport’s fuel prices are significantly higher than other airports in the area.

Commissioners immediately lowered the price to reflect a 15 percent increase. They also formed a committee to study pricing issues. Airport Manager Alan Hoos will assemble data to compare fuel prices and volume of sales. Fuel sales in October were down because the airport was closed part of that month for resurfacing.

In other business:

  • Hoos will hang fire extinguishers on the outside of hangars and mark them with blue runway reflectors to make it easier to find them at night.
  • Commissioners had asked about a back-up generator for the terminal. A contractor suggested a generator large enough to power the 400-amp service, but the commission agreed they would not need that much power. Hoos will assemble information from past electric bills to determine how much power the terminal typically uses.
  • Hoos is still reaching out to potential partners who might be interested in establishing a heliport at the airport.
  • Bids will be taken for roofing work on two hangars.
  • The airport will not schedule any fly-in events until spring.
