Accident ties up highway traffic

Trips between Eureka Springs and Berryville on US 62 generally take only about 15 minutes, but motorists were backed up in a traffic jam miles long Friday, Jan. 6, in the afternoon after a two-vehicle traffic accident.

“It was a big boondoggle,” according to one resident caught in motionless traffic. “It was hard to find out what was happening. I was about to scream.”

Responding to the accident were the Eureka Springs Fire Dept. and EMS Service, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and Arkansas State Police. Cpl. Elizabeth Hoffman, spokeswoman for ASP, wrote in an email that the captain said it was apparently a simple crash.

“Someone was moving a grain auger and it turned over onto a car, crushing the car,” Hoffman said. “There were no injuries, but the road was blocked for a couple of hours while they found a way to disentangle the farm equipment from the car and remove it from the roadway. So, it was a non-injury simple crash. It just took a long time to get cleaned up and the roadway opened back up.”
